Marketplace Facilitator is anyone that works with sellers to facilitate the sale of the seller’s products through a platform provided by the Marketplace Facilitator. Marketplace Facilitators do this by listing, collecting payments, and possibly shipping products for Marketplace Sellers. Some Marketplace Facilitators you may know include Amazon, Ebay, and Mercato.Q: What is a Marketplace Facilitator?
- Which States currently have Marketplace Facilitation laws?
Currently in the US all states except Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana, and Oregon have a form of the Marketplace Facilitator Law.
Q: What is a Mecato’s role for Sales Tax?
Mercato will take care of collecting and remitting sales tax on the behalf of their Sellers in certain states as required by law.
Different states have different laws. If you have locations in a different state, the laws and Mercato’s treatment of sales tax may differ.
- What if I also sell online through my own site?
Marketplace Facilitators are only responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on transactions occurring on their platform. If you also sell through your own website then you will be responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on any transactions into states that you have nexus.
- Do I have to fill out any additional documentation as a Marketplace Seller?
No - All of the registration requirements are on the Marketplace Facilitator.
- Is there anything else I need to do as a Marketplace Seller as this change is being made?
No additional action is needed on your part.
